General Conference

Lynnie entertained herself for a long time during Conference this morning by putting this Hello, Kitty washcloth on her toes, and then Daddy's toes, and then her toes, and...

Abajo, Window!

Ellie has discovered that if she takes off her shoe, she can roll down the window with her toe.  She likes to tell it, "abajo, window!"

Look at these brave girls at the park!  Ellie will come up the ladder by herself now, only occasionally wanting me to stand by her for the last-rung-to-the-blue-landing transfer.  And Lynnie decided that walking up the stairs was more fun than crawling up the stairs.

Uncle Kyle

Uncle Kyle is a kid magnet.  Lynnie is a total Mama's girl (and I completely love it!) and sometimes will not even go to Dad.

But Lynnie always goes to Uncle Kyle.

She has been spending time this week walking back and forth with Uncle Kyle and whoever is handy:  me, Grandpa, Grandma, Dad.  She is so close to walking completely on her own.  She will push off and even change directions by herself.

We invited Davis over to play today, and were sad that he was only here for a couple of hours.  There was much laughing and no fighting, and we played with just about every toy in the house.  We had a snack and lunch, and after eating pizza, we played with the "bumblebees" for quite a while, until Ellie and Davis could not keep them in the bin.  Then we cleaned up and went on a walk.

Lynnie's new favorite food is a banana.  She calls them nanas and will sign and say it.  At breakfast this morning she ate scrambled eggs, some bread, and half a banana.

Kyle, Jonette, et al. are in town, so we had a big family dinner at Grandma's house (even though Grandpa, Grandma, and Daniel are in Arizona).  Ellie, like always, brought out all of the stuffed animals from Grandma's room, and Lynnie loved laying on the big teddy bear.  Kyralyn is always so nice and plays with E & L every time we get together.

I got up semi-early to go and judge for Festival, and Lynnie and Greg were not quite ready to be fully awake.

Mother/Daughter Book Club

Another fun night with Mom, Bobi, and Teri!  We sat by the computer for almost 2 hours, trying to Skype with Amy, but never made the connection.  Teri told us lots of funny stories, and Bobi's leg is almost healed!!!!!!!  (And yes, that deserves 7 exclamation points--she has been dealing with this for over 3 years.)  Mom filled us in on her trip to Uncle Tom's funeral.  Uncle Tom is my Grandpa Maathuis' brother, and the last of the Maathuis siblings to pass.  Grandma and Aunt Myrtle are still with us, and they are the last of that generation.  Grandma is going strong at 96.

I made the dessert, and tried a recipe from the cookbook Mom gave us all a holiday or two ago, the Worldwide Ward Cookbook.  It was called Oatmeal Pie (Mock Pecan Pie) and it was delicious.  Especially for me, since I don't like nuts (but maybe I will after I've had a NAET treatment for them).

Today's Impulse Buy

Can I just say that the check-out line at Old Navy is a nightmare?  We were in line for about 10 minutes, and the shelves are chock-full of items that Ellie and Lynlee just absolutely wanted.  Hello Kitty products, lip gloss, nail polish, bouncy balls, notebooks, candy--you get the picture.  I never buy things in the check-out line, and don't mind saying NO 5,000 times, but I thought this Dora and Boots were too cute to pass up.

We were in line behind Sister Barnes, my old piano students Brooke, Jake, and Shelby's grandma, and we had a nice "it's-so-great-to-see-you-what-have-you-been-up-to" visit for those 10 minutes.

Playing with Cousins

Tanya, Andrew, and Emily came to play, and we have had a great day!  Andrew and Ellie play really well together, and Emily and Lynnie play in the same area as each other, which is developmentally appropriate.  They are pretty good about not taking each others' toys, so I count that a success.

This totally cool rocking horse was a hand-me-down from Nina and Lexi Jackson.  If you push the red circle on its ear it makes galloping and neighing noises, which is the best.

Big Girl Cup

Lynnie has been fascinated with my cup lately and good at taking sips.  I have started giving her "big girl" cups at mealtimes, and she is getting better about swallowing the water instead of filling the  pocket of her bibs with the water.

Ellie:  Mom, look at me!
Mom:  You are so silly.  Let me take a picture.
Ellie:  But it hurts my legs.

Good Morning, Sunshine!

Lynnie always wakes up happy!

St Patrick's Day

Mom's Lucky Charms
Love when I guess right on sizes--these shirts were Old Navy clearance from last year, and they were perfect for the girls today.

Friday, March 16, 2012

We had dinner with Tammy and Tammy's high school friend Danette, along with Danette's daughters Sarah (9) and Samantha (4).  I took E&L to the trampoline while Greg was cooking and we were waiting for Danette to come.  They both love it so much!

After Danette got there, Ellie attached herself to Sarah, and Sarah was nice enough to carry her around and play with her for the next couple of hours.  They played in the basement and were back and forth to the trampoline, and had a great time.  Lynnie and Samantha stayed close to us adults, and we had a great evening.

So beautiful outside today, and the girls were in heaven playing at the park.  Ellie is getting braver, and was hanging on the monkey bars (as she called it) for the first time.  Lynnie loved going up the stairs and down the slide by herself.

But I'm Just So Tired

Ellie was up early today, and then through a series of craziness, Lynnie only napped for 30 minutes in the car, so we didn't do her nap and Ellie's quiet time in the afternoon at home.  I was hoping Ellie would fall asleep during quiet time, because I knew she was tired, but that didn't happen.

While I was fixing dinner at 4:30, Lynnie was eating her dinner and Ellie was watching Dora.  I was talking to Ellie and trying to keep her attention engaged, when she said, "but I'm just so tired."  Literally 2 seconds later, she was asleep.  Greg got home at 5:15 and woke her up, which translates into almost an hour of crying and whining and not being sure what to do with herself.  Once she was fully awake and had eaten dinner, she was bouncing off the walls and happy, and we managed to get her to bed around 9.

I got Ellie a little scooter and she and Lynnie have been trying it out inside.  Lynnie is really brave and adventurous, and I loved finding her like this: sitting on the scooter, intently trying to figure out how it works.

Camp's Slide

Greg, Ellie, Lynnie and I went to dinner at my mom's house tonight.  Grandma Maathuis was there, and we had a nice dinner.  Ellie loves to play on the slide in the basement, and she calls it "Camp's Slide."

Ellie started calling my mom Camp when she was little, and Grandma Camp was quite a mouthful.  We have lots of grandmas, so Camp has stuck and it is a great nickname!

It's the Little Things

It is the little things that make me happy.  When we built our house in 2006, I we chose to have the standard lighting package because I we didn't like any of the options.  It didn't make sense to pay for an upgrade when I didn't like any of the upgrades.  We Cody picked some basic light fixtures for the basement, and then ordered more to replace most of our lights upstairs.  He came on Saturday and installed this light fixture in the girls' bathroom.  Like I said, it is really just the little things that make me happy.  I smile every time I look at this light fixture.

Last Game of the Season

...and I love this call--some kind of foul, not sure what that mechanic means!

Voice Male

I just learned that 'every girl wants a man with a farmer tan' at the Library Fundraiser.  Voice Male was the entertainment, and they were entertaining!  They had some really funny bits.

The longer I live in Lehi, the more fun events like this are.  I saw so many people that I know, including Todd & Rachel.  So fun!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

We headed back to the ophthalmologist for another follow-up appointment this morning.  Dr. Larsen has left to go to Kansas, so we got to meet Dr. Young.  While waiting for her to come in, Lynnie and Daddy played "do do do" which is their fun tickle game.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

The thermometer on the car said it was 57 degrees outside, so we decided to play a little after getting home from the grocery store (another milk run -- the girls drink about a gallon a day).  It was fun, but the wind started whipping and so we only lasted about half an hour.

Water Beads

Lynnie can't get enough of the water beads.  Any time she catches a glimpse of them, she signs "ball" and says "bah" and wants to play!

Yes, I Cheat

I can't seem to help it -- I have to win!  I use the undo button a lot to make sure that happens...

Saturday, March 3, 2012

Today is Piano Festival for the elementary school students, and Madelin was my lone performer.  She did awesome!  She meant to play her Raindrops song first and started with The Great Smoky Mountains.  About 6 measures in, she stopped and looked at me with the biggest look of panic, and asked the judges if she could start again.  They said yes, reswitched the music (they had rearranged already) and Madelin started again.  She was a little shaken up but managed to pull it together quickly and finished strongly.

I was thinking about teaching piano lessons on my way home from watching Madelin.  I have taught since I was 16 years old, and it feels like a big part of my identity.  I only have a handful of students now, just to keep a toe in the waters (to mix my metaphors).  Ellie asks almost every day if it is Thursday, because that is the day the girls get to play with Aunt Jo, Madelin and Sadie while I teach, and Ellie loves it.

I get so wrapped up in my own mom-world that my toehold in the piano world can get pretty tenuous.  Take last Thursday, for example.  I texted McKinzie and Joanna at 11:30 a reminder that we were doing regular lessons and not a group lesson (so that Madelin could have one more regular lesson before performing today).  And then I totally forgot about it until McKinzie and Syreese knocked on my door at 3:30.  Lynlee was still asleep from a monster nap, and that was a good thing, because I had planned on hitting the grocery store as soon as she woke up.  Totally spaced piano lessons...

Blast From the Past

This morning we finally had a winter snowstorm, and Greg was headed out to shovel the driveway.  His winter gear is all packed in his snowmobiling bag, which is somewhere in the abyss that is our garage, so I looked to find an alternate. I found this darling picture in a bin with gloves.  I have no idea how it got there, but it is fun to see!  Kylene looks 2, so this would have been in about 1995.

More details, Jonette or Ky?

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The morning was a flurry of text messages (and I took a moment to ponder that when we became a book club in 2002, barely any of us had cell phones, let alone texting) with the fate of that night's meeting in question:  to cancel or not to cancel?  Tiff, Erin, and Stephanie were out, but in the end, Ilene, Kandice, Kelly and I agreed we did not want to cancel.  We missed TES but managed to have fun anyways.  About 9:30, Kelly realized she had not taken her picture that day and so we quickly posed for her.  Since she used my camera and my computer to get it uploaded, I have no qualms with using the same picture for my post!
